Reflections of a Homeless Romantic

from Jim Dusty - Words Of Prey by Jim Dusty

/

lyrics

I sleep here in my car, In the parking garage
Haunted by dreams, of ghosts from my past.
A knife in the dark, a needle so sharp,
And your face imposed, over my heart.
I dream of your smile, haven't seen for a while
As winter creeps in, to lay frost on my tyres

I don't feel the cold, no I don't feel at all
Just a prisoner of my own internal walls
Trying to pinpoint the cause
Of what would ensure I would never be yours

So now I take to the street
To seek comfort in concrete
Something stable and strong, like I'll never be
I take off the gloves, and try to let go of
These pointless "what-if's"
'Cause I know our love
Is a treacherous game,
Of futility and shame
A fickle regret for which I was to blame
'Cause I'm just a slave to self-sabotage and pain
With no self-control

A wretch with no name
Painted in grey
Just like the clouds that will drench me with rain

And now, I stand in the rain
And hope for spare change
From people who's eyes
Never rest on my face

The holes in my heart match the holes in my shoes
I stare down the hunger, like the photo of you

That we took on that trip
Before it all went to shit
Snuck out in the night
Woke up on a drip
In a hospital bed, sheets splattered with red
And all i recall, was the last thing you said,
As you stood there and wept
Suggested I'd probably be better off dead.
